INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Sierra Nevada College Board of Trustees Chairman Barry Munitz on Monday announced the election of John Olsen to the college's board of trustees, taking the seat vacated when Richard Rubsamen resigned to assume the presidency of the college.
According to a Monday SNC press release, Olsen is executive vice president for K12, Inc., and is in charge of Capital Education, the newly formed K12 subsidiary that recently purchased the assets of the Cardean Learning Group.
K12 has been the recipient of multiple awards in 2010 from the U.S. Distance Learning Association (USDLA) for excellence in the field of distance learning, including the 21st Century Best Practices Award for its online school programs for students in kindergarten through high school; Outstanding Leadership by an Individual in the Field of Distance Learning Award to Ron Packard, founder and CEO of K12; and a Best Practices in Distance Learning Programming Award for its Honors Earth Science program.
“In addition, when it comes to students' academic performance, state test scores demonstrate that K12 students outperform other “virtual” high-school students on standardized tests,” the release reads.
Olsen joined K12 in March 2004 and served as senior vice president of operations through October 2006. From October 2004 to March 2006, he also headed K12's marketing department. Prior to joining K12, he was vice president of performance improvement for America Online's broadband, premium and advanced technology services.
Olsen previously served as a management consultant at Diamond Technology Partners, where he practiced in the telecommunications, financial services and consumer products industries. He also served eight years in the U.S. Navy as a supply officer in activities ranging from aviation logistics to major weapons systems acquisition. Olsen holds a bachelor of science from the U.S. Naval Academy and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan.
Rubsamen said: “I have known John since last October, when Cardean began its conversations with K12. Throughout my work with John, he has proven to be a wise, fair, and energetic partner. John's presence on our board offers a broadening of both depth and breadth, derived from John's lengthy and successful experience at K12, and the company's standing nationally, including with the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, John's leadership of Capital Education will bring a commitment to academic excellence, high standards, and results-oriented education to our online partnership. Both Chairman Munitz and I think highly of John and are pleased to have him as a new member of our team.”
