Excitement among competitors, sponsors and equestrian enthusiasts is building daily for the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby in Washoe Valley on Saturday, Sept.19, 2010. Among those eager for Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby, you'd be hard pressed to beat the excitement level the 50 hounds participating in the “Calling of the Hounds” will exhibit just before the derby gets underway. When the horn blows calling the hounds to hunt – the Red Rock Walker Hounds are beyond ready. Their frenzied excitement is something to behold. All 50 hounds will parade the FM Derby course with their master. The inclusion of the celebrated “Calling of the Hounds” in the FM Derby program acknowledges the historical role hounds played during fox hunts. “The hounds all want to go to work!” said Lynn Lloyd of Red Rock Hounds, whose hounds will participate in the pre-derby entertainment. “They'll make certain everyone knows all equestrian Hunter show ring competitions started with fox hunters.”

Prior to the start of the competition there will be an audience-pleasing “Calcutta Auction.” A “Calcutta” is where bidding on each contestant and its rider allows members of the audience to “buy” a contestant. The winning contestant then “splits” its portion of the purse with the audience member who purchased the team. Since the “Calcutta” is done in good fun and the audience portion of the proceeds is typically donated to charity.
The Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby will feature the nation's best horses and riders competing for a $25,000 purse, which is split among the top winners.
FM Derby is a member event of the Chronicle of the Horse/United States Hunter Jumper Association International Derby Series presented by Dietrich Insurance. The series is designed to bring the basic principles of riding back into hunter derby competitions by using challenging courses, interesting jump materials and a wide variety in fence construction. Horses and riders will soar over 10 jumps. Some jumps more than 4 feet high. They will jump obstacles similar to those found in fox hunting such as a stone wall, a board fence or gate, a coop, hedge, brush logs and natural foliage.Hunter derby horses are judged not on time but on conformation and their ability to maneuver the course during the competition. Judges look for the correct number of strides between jumps, the appearance of the horse during the jump and how well the horse listens to the rider. The great showmanship and athleticism of competitors will combine with a modern pageant setting and a full range of social activities including a promenade of shops and a total culinary experience at the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby.
