Get ready to get worldly, because United Nations Week is coming to Sierra Nevada College Oct. 18-24.
The week of public programs, organized by Dr. Bill Redel, president of the United Nations Association in Nevada, will focus on global and cultural awareness.
"We really want to get the public involved in the events, "Redel said. "We've been doing this for 13 years and it's always been successful. The community really likes it and we encourage their participation."
The public will have many opportunities to get involved from participating in a mock trial on nuclear arms to posing questions to various speakers on such topics as the Israel and Palestine crisis, US foreign policy and global crisis.
"We are trying to bring things into focus that are not in the news," Redel said.
United Nations Week keynote speaker, Siegfried Ramler, a former Nuremberg Trials interpreter, will speak in honor of United Nations Day, Friday, Oct. 24th. He will speak on the topic, "The United Nations and the International System of Justice." Ramler worked in the Interpreting Branch at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg from the mid- to late-1940's.
On Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., the Slavyanka Singers, a 20-man acappella chorus from the Bay Area will perform songs from Eastern Europe.
The Asha belly dancers will perform Middle Eastern folkloric dances Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m., a speaker from the Israeli Embassy will speak on the Israeli-Palestine crisis.
Dr. Redel will present "Global Hot Spots," a discussion on various areas of conflict across the world on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
The Da'Owaga All Nations Drum and Song Group will perform Native American drumming and songs Oct. 22nd at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m., Jim Nakada will speak on "U.S. Policy on the Western Pacific Indigenous Peoples."
Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., the public is encouraged to get involved in a mock trial entitled "The Morality of Nuclear Power." This mock United Nations court concerns the morality and control of nuclear arms. Legal representatives, SNC students and the audience will be involved.
The week will conclude with Siegfried Ramler's talk on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
Events are free and will be held in Patterson Hall on the SNC Lake Campus.
United Nations Week is sponsored by SNC, the Chamber Music Society of Incline Village and the family of Jim Nakada.
