Support the Truckee River with annual event

On Sunday, October 17 the ninth Annual Truckee River Days will be held. This event has grown into a very large one due to the commitment of a dedicated corps of individuals and groups.

Through this event there has been great attention brought to our Truckee River drainage and the importance it has to all of us who live, visit or recreate in this region.

The Truckee River and its watershed is not only a beautiful setting, but a large part of what drives our local economy. Without its recreational opportunities, the area would be lacking one of its integral components.

In this year with the river particularly low, most can easily appreciate the significance of this stream.

As a result, Truckee River Days is extremely important in raising the awareness of everyone in our community. The projects that will be undertaken will help insure the long-term health of this system.

The only thing that can restore the flow into the river, is a good winter with lots of moisture. The projects scheduled for Truckee River Day will go a long way in helping the watershed.

These projects include light- and heavy-duty trash clean-up; river work such as planting, weed removal and mulching; Martis Wildlife Area trail rehabilitation; Bull pasture stream restoration; installation of a weather station at Sagehen Creek Field Station; meadow restoration; aspen stand regeneration, Martis Creek Fish Spawning Habitat Restoration; Prosser Lakeview Road Eradication; and Musk thistle removal on Boca Hill.

Fishermen will be particularly interested in helping out with the Martis Creek Fish Spawning Habitat Restoration work.

This involves a half day commitment from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers will be placing spawning gravels in Martis Creek below the dam. This project is being spearheaded by the local fly fishing group, the Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers.

The fly fishermen and women are looking for volunteers from the club or the local community that can come and help out on this worthwhile project. Contact John Roberts of the Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers at (530) 582-8548 if you can volunteer your help.

Everyone has reasons for helping on Truckee River Day. For most, it is because they feel a sense of ownership of the Truckee River itself.

You cannot live by a body of water such as the Truckee and not have strong feelings about it. It is the essence of why many people that live here love our region. Its watershed affords us the opportunity for recreation and beautiful settings.

Support the ninth annual Truckee River Day. You can register at www.truckeeriverday.org or by calling (530) 550-8760.

Check-in sites will vary depending on which project you sign up for. Check-in times are 9 a.m. for all- day projects and 11 a.m. for day projects. All projects finish by 3 p.m.

A celebration event will be held immediately following the projects at Granite Flat Campground approximately one mile south of Truckee on Highway 89.

At this event you can talk to other volunteers, enjoy some delicious food at family style prices, and check out some of the booths about the Truckee River. Kids will love the Fish Tent. At 4 p.m. a Lahontan Cutthroat Trout release is planned as part of the ongoing effort to recover this native species to the Truckee River drainage.

Fishing Report

Boca

(7,014 Acre Feet) Inflow is a low 45 cfs and the outflow is 42 cfs. Boat and shore anglers have had fairly good success. Fish have been caught with minnow imitating lures and flasher combination rigs.

Most anglers are fishing from shore using nightcrawlers or Powerbait. Fly fishermen near the inlet have experienced fair to good action.

Nymphs and streamers have accounted for most of the fish caught, although some fish have also been caught on dry flies and emergers.

Donner

Fishing has been good for mackinaw. A combination of jigging and trolling has been successful. Shore fishermen near the launch ramp have had fair success. Nightcrawlers and Powerbait seem to be the main bait. Fly fishermen have taken a few fish mostly with streamers.

Lake Tahoe

At 6,222.85 on Oct. 10 (Lake Level 6,223.00) Fishing has been good for mackinaw. A guide is highly recommended if you are fishing for mackinaw for the first time. Toplining and shore fishing is fair.

Prosser

(4,603 Acre Feet) Prosser is fishing fair to good. Boat anglers have been catching fish with minnow imitating lures and flasher combination rigs. Most anglers have been shore fishing with nightcrawlers or Powerbait. Fly fishermen have been taking a few fish near the inlets and the dam with nymphs and streamers.

Stampede

(106,014) Stampede fishing has been fair to good. Boat anglers have had good success and have caught fish with minnow imitating lures and flasher combination rigs.

Shore fishermen are also doing pretty well. Most are using nightcrawlers or Powerbait. Fly fishermen are using a combination of nymphs, emergers, dries and streamers with fair to good success.

Martis Lake

(Martis is restricted to artificial lures with barbless hooks. Zero fish may be bagged or possessed) - Fishing is fair, mostly small Cutthroats.

Most anglers are using midge emergers, pheasant tails, hares ears, small damsels and streamers. The water is very warm. The past couple of years the weed growth has limited fishing on this lake to early and late season when the weeds are less of a factor.

Little Truckee River

(Special Regulation Water - Artificial lures or flies with barbless hooks - no bait. Only two fish with a maximum size of 14 inches may be possessed) This body of water between Stampede Reservoir and Boca Reservoir is the area's best option, but continues to be very crowded.

Flows are now 47 cfs. Fishing will be difficult at this flow. This water has been very crowded all season. Anglers are using nymphs such as the PT and Hares Ear. Dries and emergers are also working.

Truckee River

Lake Tahoe has dropped below is natural rim and there is no measurable flow coming into the river at Tahoe City. The stretch between Tahoe City and River Ranch is almost void of water, and only a mere 6.8 cfs between River Ranch and Truckee.

Fishing is fair to good where you can find adequate flows in the river. Below Donner Creek and Boca the flow gradually increases. Anglers should concentrate in this section through the canyon below Boca. Most fly fishermen are using nymphs, emergers and dries now. Streamers can also be very productive.

Other Waters

Davis and Frenchman reservoirs have been fishing fair to good for most anglers. Fish are starting to be caught in shallow water at Frenchman and Davis. Intermediate and floating lines are working well.
