Mass tax hearings to be heard soon

After making headway last month in their fight against what they deem as unequal property taxation, North Shore residents petitioning their tax assessments will be heard by the Washoe County Board of Equalization in mass hearings next week.

The tax board has scheduled property tax hearings for North Shore petitioners Wednesday through Friday.

"We have an extremely strong case," said Les Barta, one of the petitioning property owners and a member of the Village League to Save Incline Assets, the local group protesting its property tax assessments. "There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that there are significant problems in the way taxes have been handled in Washoe County. I think the truth will come out and the board will do the right thing."

Ted Harris of the Village League also urged property owners to show their concern for the issue by being present during the hearings.

"You don't need to fill out forms, write letters or appear to testify," he wrote in a recent e-mail to petitioners.

The Village League gained a foothold Jan. 24 when BOE members voted unanimously to allow petitioners from Incline Village and Crystal Bay to join in a consolidation to be heard en masse for tax assessment concerns they have in common.

These concerns fall into four categories, Hall explained. He contends in the consolidated petition that the 8 percent land factor increase is invalid; that assessments on parcels within Washoe County and in relation to parcels outside of the county have not been properly equalized; and the manner in which taxes have been assessed have not followed due process nor have they followed proper rules and regulations of property appraisal and assessment.

Hearings are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. each day at the Washoe County Commission Chambers, 1001 East Ninth Street, Reno.
