Incline Village physician Dr. Jeanne Plumb completed training on the use of an emerging therapy using biologically equivalent human hormones, also known as bio-identical hormones, for the treatment of menopause symptoms.
Plumb, of North Tahoe Family Care, attended a three-day symposium in Houston, Texas along with Brant Skanson R.Ph, owner of Village Pharmacy.
Village Pharmacy is a compounding pharmacy in Incline Village specializing in women's and men's hormone replacement therapy.
Unlike synthetic or animal hormones, bio-identical hormones match the structure and the function of human hormones making them indistinguishable from those created by the body, Skanson explained.
The goal is to restore hormone balance so patients receive a customized therapy plan developed in conjunction with their physician and compounding pharmacist, he said.
Physicians attending the symposium hosted by Professional Compounding Centers of America, or PCCA, learned from nationally recognized experts in the field how to clinically use and prescribe bio-identical hormones.
Skanson is one of only 3,000 independent community pharmacists nationwide who practices the art of pharmacy compounding required to fill a prescription for bio-identicals.
With a physicians order he prepares a customized dosage form or delivery system to suit the needs of the individual patient.
