Tax cap notices

Print Comment
Property owners should be on the lookout next week for a post card from the Washoe County Assessor's Office that may save them hundreds of dollars. The post card should be read thoroughly, filled out and returned promptly.

The returned post card will qualify a residence or rental property for either the 3 percent tax cap or the "8 percent or less" tax cap signed into law on April 6 to provide a partial abatement of taxes for the 2005/2006 tax roll in Washoe County.

"It is the intent of the legislature to apply the tax cap to as many homeowners as possible; that's what our goal is," Bob McGowan, Washoe County Assessor said.

The 3 percent cap will be the maximum taxed; a property owner may find that their assessed valuation increase is less than three percent, so they will be taxed at that lower rate.

The week of May 16 the Assessor's Office will be mailing postcards to homeowners, asking that they indicate whether the home is their primary residence or is being rented. A separate postcard will be mailed to owners of rental properties in Washoe County.

For more information check the Assessor's Office webpages on the Washoe County Web site www.washoecounty.us or call the Assessor's Office at (775) 328-2200.
