Bonanza Photo - Emma Garrard Gabriel Marquez, Consuelo Marquez, Eloisa Pavra, and Fernanda Lopez of Marquez Mexican Restaurant pose Wednesday at the restaurant in the lower Village Shopping Center.
Unlike trendy Mexican-style restaurants that offer Tex Mex, Southwestern or other somewhat compromised cuisine, Gabriel and Consuelo Marquez, owners of Marquez Mexican Restaurant at the Village Shopping Center, strive for authenticity and simplicity.
Their menu is Mexican - pure, simple and good as Gabriel prepares dishes from his native Guadalajara.
"The city is two hours or so from the ocean so there's not a lot of seafood in the dishes," Marquez said of his menu offerings. "Mostly the dishes include meat and chicken and corn not flour."

Another traditional fare at Marquez, which is very unusual for a Mexican eatery, is breakfast.
Whether it's good old American bacon and eggs, an omelet, huevos rancheros or a breakfast burrito, Marquez will start your day off right.
Lunches include burritos, tostadas and sandwiches. Dinner selections include combination plates, fajitas and specials, like chile verde and chile Colorado, as well as specialties milanesa, a steak dish and la tampiquena, a sliced beef dish, served with enchiladas.
"All our ingredients are natural and fresh," Marquez said, adding that he gets produce and perishables trucked up from San Jose every week. "And I prepare everything from scratch."

Incline resident Chris Lackie, who was raised in San Diego, has nothing but praise for Marquez.
"Coming from San Diego, you can say I've had great Mexican food, even across the border," Lackie said. "The food here ranks right up with the best and besides me eating here regularly, I bring my employees the last Friday of every month for lunch."
Marquez also hosts the Soroptomists, a Rotary Club, and can accommodate a banquet of about 20, Gabriel said.
Marquez boasts a full catering menu and will make sure your next occasion is a well-fed affair.
