A poll bunch of opinions

Look out, Bob McGowan. Bonanza readers have spoken.

After the Village League to Save Incline Assets filed a claim to oust the Washoe County Assessor from his post, the Bonanza launched its first online poll asking readers if, after 23 years of service, McGowan should lose his job as the assessor of Washoe County property taxes.

By press time Thursday, 201 said no and 414 said yes.

Our first poll blew me away. From the moment I launched it at 5 p.m. Tuesday, I couldn't stop hitting my computer's "refresh" button. Readers were responding at an exponential rate.

Thirty-some people responded to the poll by Wednesday morning. Then the number crept to 50 a few hours later. Then someone posted a comment.

If McGowan ever wondered what Bonanza readers think of him, all he needs to do is check out our Web site.

The first comment:

"I think McGowan has done a serviceable job in office for more than two decades. It will be interesting to see what the judge says."

And then:

"I'm not sure that what he does can be called a service. I think he has been doing a disservice to the Washoe County community for too long and can be correctly characterized as an arrogant bureaucrat who has outlived any usefulness he may have once had.

"McGowan has exhibited all the things we fear and hate about government employees who are not answerable directly to their constituents. He is arrogant, ignores the law, and treats his constituents with disdain at best or totally ignores their comments and objections at worst. He has no place in public service."

"Twenty three years is too long for anyone to be an assessor, for the same reasons that term limits are placed on other public positions. We need fresh ideas and attitudes."

One reader called our decision to select a question on McGowan as our first in our online poll "a very poor journalistic decision and supportive of the tax revolt group which is not in tune with what our community really needs and therefore, the Bonanza is out of tune also."

Since more than 600 people weighed in on McGowan in 48 hours (and no, people can't vote twice), I think our tax revolt group, the community and this newspaper know what Incline Village needs.

It's very simple - all we want is to be treated fairly and equaly.

I hope you all enjoy our new polling feature as much as we at the Bonanza do. Readers can make their voices heard, respond to each other's comments, and we benefit enormously from this new form of communication with our readers.

Look for a poll question relating to a news article in each issue of the Bonanza and cast your vote on tahoebonanza.com. Responses to polls will be posted on our opinion page.

Happy voting!
