Next weekend Incline High School students will step into the mock shoes of United Nations ambassadors to present and debate international issues in the areas first Model U.N. conference.
Amy Henderson's sophomore geography students will represent Belize; Nancy Rogan's speech and debate class will take on the roles of the United Kingdom, South Africa and Romania.
"The (students) are really excited to be treated like adults and have their ideas heard," said Henderson, a student teacher at Incline High School and the faculty advisor for this year's Model U.N. "It's a great exercise in parliamentary procedure.
"The kids have to get in the mindset of their country and debate their issues in professional setting."
Christin Thompson and Julia Gregory, seniors at Incline High School, will act as advisors to the student ambassadors.
"It's a really great opportunity for everyone to learn what's going on in the world outside of Incline," Thompson said. "Everyone is taking time out of their schedules to prepare and it should go really well."
In addition to the student discussions, Saturday's "A day with the United Nations" will include a afternoon presentation on the current progress and goals of the United Nations by Dr. Chris O'Sullivan, a professor at University of San Francisco.
O'Sullivan has worked with the United Nations for several years in Jordan and other areas of the Middle East. His presentation will begin at 3 p.m. at Patterson Hall on the Sierra Nevada College campus.
Later in the evening students and community members will be treated to free concert from the Slavyanka Choral Group of American Singers. The chorus will present Eastern European and Russian folk songs at 7:30 p.m.
"The whole day's events should go really well," said Bill Redell, International Studies professor at Sierra Nevada College. "The chorus is positively wonderful, our guest speaker is very knowledgeable and the entire day is free for everyone in the community to attend."
