For Lake Tahoe, known to be a dog's world, newest on the North Shore's list of canine-friendly amenities is Dog Gone Crazy, the dog spa, camp and bakery.
Fit with their exclusive baker, certified groomer and high end boarding facilities, the new dog destination and day care has already seen success in its inaugural two weeks.
According to Bill West, manager and conceptual creator of the facility off National Avenue in Tahoe Vista, they have been well-received with much of their business stemming from word of mouth. The camp expanded from the Agate Bay Animal Hospital, where West and his wife, Veterinarian Dr. Bree Montana first started their animal care business two years ago.
The Dog Gone Crazy camp has a totally fenced in grassy yard, with four separate outdoor play areas. Dogs sleep in top of the line kennels and receive several walks throughout the day. In addition, the camp is backed up to National Forest Land and "daily treks" are an option for boarded pets.
With a full time staff, and at night, the manager of the Veterinary Hospital on site, the camp ensures that should any medical attention be needed, trained personnel is available and Dr. Montana is a phone call away.
Inside the kennel area, large, medium and smaller open ceiling kennels were occupied last Monday by a puppy, adult yellow lab and brindle greyhound. The kennels can fit, according to West, 160-pound malamutes to little schnauzers, and options of doubling kennels also exist. Each morning dogs like these are photographed by an Internet Web camera and owners can access the camp's Web site to view a morning picture of their pet assigned by kennel number.
In addition to the custom made kennels, the dog bath is also top notch. Built with a fold out ramp for big, or old and arthritic dogs, easy access is available for dog spa treatments.
The colorful reception area of Dog Gone Crazy was designed by landscaper West and also displays the top three organic dog foods and doggie accessories. After each pooch's stay, they are presented with a to-go dog spa package complete with homemade dog biscuits by baker Serenity Enriquez, bottled water and collapsible water bowl.
"We're trying to create the same type of feeling you would get if you went to the Hilton or Hyatt ," said West of their new business.
Owning three Siberian Huskies themselves, West and Montana have boarded their own pets at the facility when gone for the weekend. And, their dogs grace all logos and murals around the building.
Under the supervision of Dr. Montana who has been in the business for 20 years, all the staff follow her guidelines when caring for the dogs. The pet taxi service offered by the business can pick up and deliver a pet for day care or boarding stays.
West stressed that their new dog camp and spa offers "essential grooming and pampering for the Lake Tahoe Dog," so much so he said that even pet owners are wanting to check in at Dog Gone Crazy.
