Second arrest made in graffiti case

A second teen was arrested Wednesday in connection with more than $5,000 in damages to Carson Middle School from graffiti.

Logan Young-Hanes, 18, of Minden, surrendered to Carson City authorities about 3:30 p.m. after a warrant was issued for his arrest on suspicion of felony placing graffiti or defacing property.

According to police records, Young-Hanes, a Douglas High School senior, was with an unnamed 17-year-old Carson teen and 18-year-old Troy Szczotka when the trio tagged the King Street school in more than 100 locations, including three vehicles, on March 18.

"That one incident alone will cost more than $5,000 to repair the damage," said Detective Brian Humphrey.

Szczotka allegedly returned twice more in the following days and placed more graffiti, adding to the growing cost of cleanup. He was arrested April 4 on suspicion of felony placing graffiti and defacing property for three assaults on the King Street school, two taggings of at least two Carson City businesses, an incident at Bordewich-Bray Elementary School and graffiti found in the bathrooms at Carson High School between March 18 and April 2.

Detective Brian Humphrey said Szczotka's arrest led authorities to Young-Hanes.

A case against the unnamed 17-year-old has been submitted for charges to the Carson City District Attorney's office.

During an interview with Humphrey, Szczotka allegedly said a video game gave him the idea to vandalize buildings with graffiti.

Bail for Young-Hanes was set at $5,000.
