Joe Tahoe and friends examine North Shore’s four seasons

I tell people we have two seasons here at the North Shore, “Prepare to Stop!” and, “Oh my God, I CAN’T stop!” Spring? It’s called April Fool’s Day! Like an army defeated, the snow hath retreated …April Fools!

A rite of spring at the North Shore is to snow ski in the morning, water ski in the afternoon, and do paper-scissors-rock to see who has to water ski first. Fall? Last year it fell on a Friday in June. Fugetaboutit!

No, winter joy and summer fun is what the North Shore is all about. For most of us, it’s a mere 15 minutes between the moment we decide to go snowboarding and the moment we start sliding down a run called, “Show Off,” which for many of us is a gross misnomer. And the air up There? Well, Mark Twain called it, “The air that angels breathe …” Perhaps he should have qualified that statement by saying, “The air that angels and a certain number of lucky others breathe.”

In the summertime you can smell the sugar pine, which is the most intoxicating scent known to man. When I step out the front door on the first day of summer I feel like juggling chain saws and maybe going out with a Macedonian woman.

In passing, I asked a few friends and neighbors which was their favorite at the North Shore, and quickly found a proponent for each of the four seasons …“Autumn is the season I love best; with the lengthening nights and quiet days, it seems a time of introspection and renewal for me and the world that surrounds me.” –Liz Blaustein “I like winter … ice covered trees, diamonds in the snow piled high, cobalt blue skies and endless rides!” –George Galante “Sundried in Tahoe … it's been a long, long day. I went boarding in the morning, then down to the beach for them afternoon rays. How I love them ‘Lazy Days in Tahoe’ in the springtime.” –Daron Talbot, AKA: Tweeker Shred Master

“Summer offers my favorite North Shore season, those days when the Stellar jay and the squirrel and the rabbit eat out of the same bowl at the same time.” –Judy Jordan This small sampling of sentiments serves to confirm what I have suspected all along, that it’s something a little different for each of us that makes the North Shore of Lake Tahoe thebest place to be in any given season.
