Tahoe League for Charity hosts fundraiser tomorrow

On Saturday, Tahoe League for Charity will host an afternoon of wine tasting, light jazz music and silent and live auctions on the shores of Lake Tahoe to raise thousands of dollars for children and charities around the basin.

Seven years ago Tahoe League for Charity (TLC) was founded with the sole purpose of raising money for charities in the North Shore area with a focus on education.

The all-women's group has contributed more than $174,000 in the past six years to various high school scholarships and nonprofits such as Project MANA, Arts For the Schools and Tahoe Women's Services.

"This is our only fundraising event we do throughout the year to raise money for charity," said Ingrid Eccles of Tahoe League for Charity. "We invite residents and visitors to this annual social party on the lake to raise money for children and charity.

"In 2004, we raised $50,000. Every year we give those funds straight back to the north shore community."

Some 40 percent of the money raised at the event on Saturday will be given to nonprofit groups, and the other 60 percent is divided into to eight scholarships for area students.

Incline Village High School students are always participants of the TLC scholarship program, but differs in distribution than the other seven high schools around the area, explained four-year member Carol Eichorn.

"All other schools in the north shore area including Truckee High School are a part of the Truckee Tahoe Scholarship Foundation that we contribute to every year," Eichorn said. "Incline Village High School is different because the league members have direct contact with the recipient. TLC reviews all applications from the Incline students and we choose one that we agree meets all four of the requirements to receive the scholarships."

The TLC four requirements include at least a 3.0 GPA, a request for financial support, community service and being an all-around student, Eichorn said.

Andrew Herr of Incline Village was the recipient of the 2006 Tahoe League for Charity scholarship for Incline Village High School; 2005 IHS recipient Christina Brown will speak at the event as a representative for past scholarship winners.

"This year we did not ask local merchants for donations for the auction items," MaryEllen Vogt, the event's chairwoman, said. "We know that almost every non-profit has asked local business throughout the year for charitable gifts or donations and we know it takes a real hit on our merchants to keep giving.

"Our theme this year is 'Charity begins at home' and TLC took that seriously not only in our commitment but in our pocketbooks too."

Participating in efforts to raise money will not leave guests empty handed at Saturday's event organizers said.

Items that will be offered at the live and silent auctions include a condo rental on the Oregon coast, four 49er tickets, original oil paintings, dinner parties for eight each, a two hour Tahoe boat cruise complete with refreshments and a Tahoe lunch cruise on a 35-foot boat.

Four very unique wines will be auctioned off and more will be available to taste from different wineries.

Among those items gift baskets with special themes for home enjoyment as well as "surprise" boxes will be available to purchase.

Tickets are still available but reservations are required. Call (530) 546-9137 or 583-1811 and visit www.tahoeleagueforcharity.org for more information.
