Injuries hit Incline Lady Highlander tennis team

Print Comment
Lady Highlander tennis coach Aaron Parsons said his team was battling more than the Reno High School tennis team in Tuesday's 15-3 loss at the Incline Tennis Center.

"We've been fighting illness and injuries the past couple of days," Parsons said. "But the girls still played some very close matches."

Incline started out strong as singles player Shea Wickland won her opening match 7-5, followed by teammate Suzy Thompson's 6-4 victory.

The Lady Highlanders fell in the next four matches of the first round, with senior Alessandra Richards falling 2-6 in the third singles match.

Doubles teammates Liz Ferme and Amanda Martini fell 4-6 and in a very hard fought match, the doubles team of Jessica Dykstra and Rebecca Corpuel finally lost 6-7, while Aislinn Murray and Kate Mitchell lost 2-6.

Wickland was the only winner in the second round as she easily defeated her opponent 6-4, but the Huskies took the next five matches, with Lauren Bernstein falling 1-6 in a singles match along with Richards 2-6 and doubles teams Aislinn Mitchell and Cheryl Pillsbury 1-6, Ferme and Martini 3-6 and Dykstra and Corpuel 2-6.

The third round saw the Huskies make it a clean sweep with all three singles matches resulting in 0-6 shutouts and three doubles losses.

"The match was a great barometer for the girls, " Parsons said. "We try to learn from every match and, hopefully, we'll take from what we learned here, get some of the girls healthy and keep going strong."
