Service organizations: Precedent setting collaboration benefits entire community

Print Comment
The collaborative efforts of service and community organizations around the Incline Village/Crystal Bay area are well on their way to setting a template for communities around the basin and a precedent for communities across the nation.

Responsible for much of this positive activity is the Parasol Community Collaboration (PCC) and the Parasol Community Foundation (PCF). The PCF is a nonprofit foundation that aims to provide support financially and otherwise to nonprofit organizations in the North Tahoe area. The PCC is a membership organization that nonprofits and agencies from around the basin can join. Member organizations join one of four PCC subcommittees: arts and culture, education, environment or social services.

In August of 2002, the Parasol Community Foundation opened the D.W. Reynolds Nonprofit Center, a 32,000-square-foot building designed to support community organizations. The center is now home to several PCC membership organizations such as the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and Tahoe Women’s Services who are able to set up office space in the building for very low fees.

Today, the PCC has come so far in fulfilling its mission to maximize resources for the benefit of the community that membership organizations voted almost unanimously in late 2005 to begin paying up to $1,000 a year to belong to the group.

Collaborate events such as “Trails of Treats and Terror”, “X-stream Clean the Village”, and the “Holiday Giving Program” have been deemed successful not only by participating agencies, but by outside organizations as well.

Most recently, the Incline Village General Improvement District was given a Program Excellence Award for the “Trails of Treats and Terror” event by the Nevada Recreation and Parks Society, a distinction IVGID passed on to other PCC organizations that collaborated to make the event a success.

The community Halloween event drew more than 400 participants who strolled amongst ghouls and ghosts from the D.W. Reynold Center to the Recreation Center and on to the Sierra Nevada College campus.

The Holiday Giving Program identified 127 local families and more than 280 local children as qualified recipients for more than 600 new toys along with winter coats and boots that were collected by service organizations, businesses and religious congregations in the North Shore area.

The Star Follies is a unique nonprofit organization that has raised more than $600,000 over the past six years for the benefit of the children and staff of Incline’s public schools.

The group puts on an annual production that features individuals of all ages from around town in a lip-synching cabaret-style production.

The fundraising success of the production is a tribute to organizer dedication, casting enthusiasm and community support for schools and for a highly anticipated event.

Organizers say Incline schools have slowly come to depend on the Star Follies for financial support that has enabled each facility to retain positions and programs that would otherwise be cut.
