Almost 200 literary buffs crammed into Sierra Nevada College's Patterson Dining Hall Friday night to watch 17 local poets battle it out with rhyme, rhythm and verse.
"It was a wonderful event, with so many people," said SNC Media Liasion Marnie McArthur. "A really energetic night."
Prize money went to the top-three slam poets, two of whom used stage names: third place went to SNC student Riannon Skelly, second place, "Rita G." from Carson City and the first-place prize of $100 went to "Kai," an SNC student.
The evening was emceed by Sam Pierstoff, editor of the Quercus Review and producer of the Ill List Invitational Poetry Slam in Modesto, Calif.
Slam Poetry was invented by Chicago construction worker and poet Marc Smith in the late 1980s. Since then, slam events have been held throughout the country, and featured in the HBO original series Def Poetry Slam.
