Sand Harbor, East Shore's most popular public destination and perhaps Tahoe's most picturesque beach will officially open its gates for summer today.
The Sand Harbor Visitor Center is the park's newest addition and state parks officials will also celebrate its grand opening with an invitation-only gala event.
"Tomorrow it's the grand opening," said Park Range Dale Conner Thursday. "Though the visitor's center has been open almost a year, the concession side just opened over Memorial Day weekend.

"The event tomorrow is invitation only, the governor's going to be there, there'll be a ribbon-cutting ceremony and then tours.
The 5,000-square-foot visitor's center is cut in half. One side, run by state parks features a self-guided tour of Sand Harbor and Lake Tahoe's East Shore. The other side includes the restaurant, a deck as well as a small store for beach necessities like water, umbrellas and sunscreen.
"It is going to be possible to have weddings and private events during shoulder seasons," Conner said. "We feel the visitor's center is a perfect location with a deck overlooking Diver's Cove, and it's a little more upscale."

The restaurant will feature a full lunch and dinner.
"Really, the intent is to serve people who are already here for the day," Conner said. "I think it's a great addition."

If you go:
The restaurant portion of the visitor's center does not yet have set summer hours parks officials said, but the goal is for the restaurant and shop to keep similar hours to Sand Harbor during peak months: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Oct. 15. After Oct. 15, the park closes at 7 p.m.
