On selected days, participating resorts are offering skiers and snowboarders discounted lift tickets. Proceeds from lift ticket purchase go directly to the Excellence in Education Foundation, which provides enhanced educational opportunities for Truckee-Tahoe students. Dates for 2007/2008 Skiing For Schools: Jan. 6, Northstar-at-Tahoe: Skiing for Schools Day. Special, pre-purchased lift tickets are only $25 per person. Limited quantity of tickets available, Dec. 28-Jan. 5, on a first-come, first-serve basis at all Porter's locations (Truckee, Tahoe City, Incline Village).

Tahoe Rim Trail Winter Trails snowshoe programs begin in January
Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association in 2008 for its third Year of Winter Trails snowshoe programs.
The snowshoe events are great for new timers, old timers and the entire family to try snow sports and to discover the great fitness and social benefits with the easy-to-learn winter sport of snowshoeing.
All snowshoe programs are accompanied with TRTA staff guides and TRTA volunteer guides, and they are free.
The 2008 Winter Trails snowshoe program kicks off on Saturday, Jan. 12 with National Winter Trails Day. It will take place at Tahoe Meadows, and TRTA will partner with Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol for a fun-filled day of snowshoeing and an educational demo on winter safety.

Free ski and snowshoe tours are offered for winter 2007/2008 in the Lake Tahoe region by winter recreation advocate Snowlands Network. Snowlands On Snow (SOS) Tours will go to Donner Summit, Mount Rose, Pole Creek (near Squaw Valley), Hope Valley, and Highway 88. The season kicked off Dec. 15 and 16 with ski and snowshoe tours on Donner Summit, near Truckee, in moderate terrain off Interstate Route 80.

Jan. 5: Ski Tour. Luther Pass/Hope Valley loop off Hwy. 89. Six miles. Intermediate.
Jan. 12: Ski Tour - Shealor-Silver Fork Ridge, Hwy. 88 near Silver Lake. Six miles. Intermediate.

National Winter Trails Day includes events on North, South shores
The 13th annual Winter Trails event offers children and adults new to snow sports the chance to try snowshoeing and/ or cross-country skiing free at more than 100 locations in 25 states and four Canadian provinces.
Through these easy-to-learn activities, participants can have fun and discover the health and fitness benefits of snow sports.
Winter Trails is presented through a partnership among SnowSports Industries America, the nonprofit member-owned trade association of snow and winter sports companies, including American Hiking Society, a recreationÐbased conservation organization that promotes and protects foot trails and the hiking experience, and Cross Country Ski Areas Association, a national organization representing Nordic Centers across North America.

Wild Winter Wednesdays are back at the River Ranch in Tahoe City
Wild Winter Wednesdays are back, starting from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 9 in the River Ranch bar. It's a great way to meet some new friends and say hello to some old ones. You can enjoy piled high nachos and wings at half price and take advantage of drink specials, including $2.50 drafts.
The festivities will include a free raffle where one can win all sorts of prizes every week including ski lift tickets, ski lessons, goggles, glasses, ski socks and gift certificates for dinner at local restaurants. The grand prize will be a skateboard. All proceeds will benefit Disabled Sports USA-Far West.

$30K available in scholarships
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association/Farmers Insurance Group Scholarship Program will give $30,000 to 10 Nevada graduating student-athletes at the conclusion of the spring season. The scholarships will assist college bound students signed to continue their athletic career at an NCAA Division I, II, III or a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics institution.
