If the first race of the year for the Sierra Nevada College men's ski team yielded any information about the team, coach Branko Zagar said it's a need to continue training.
Four members of the team, sophomore Mickey Ross and freshmen Kevin Sheehan, Jonathan Cherry and Gunnar Gottschalk all competed at the International Skiing Federation's (FIS) J2 National Qualifier at the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort Thursday.
Thursday's race was a FIS event and did not count toward or against the skier's USCSA (United States Collegiate Skiing Association) point total.
"Overall, the team skied pretty good. They made a few mistakes but they will get stronger as we get more practices in," Zagar said.
Ross, a 2006 Winter Olympian for New Zealand, finished tops on the team and took second in the first of two slalom skiing events on the day. Ross finished the course in 1:20:08.
"The course was pretty good and firm, it got a little icy as the day went on but nothing to complain about," Zagar said.
Sheehan and Cherry joined Ross in the first race. Sheehan fell and did not finish, and Cherry finished in ninth place with a time of 1:25:65.
Sheehan improved in the second race and finished in third place with a time of 1:28:02.
Cherry repeated his ninth place finish in the second race with another 1:25:65.
Gottschalk failed to place, as he fell during the race.
Originally scheduled to last from Thursday through Saturday, the Sugar Bowl race was canceled Friday and Saturday due to a storm in the Sierra Nevada.
The team currently is racing other college teams in Park City, Utah. Racing will wrap up on Thursday.
