Maine awaits SNC riders

The Sierra Nevada College snowboard team is using the Chevrolet Revolution Tour as a way to springboard itself to Wednesday's United States Collegiate Skiing and Snowboarding Association's National Championship races at Sunday River Mountain, Maine.

On Friday, Spencer Cordovano, a sophomore for the Eagles, placed first at the Revolution Tour's men's boardercross event at Sno Mountain Ski Resort in Pennsylvania. The team raced at the tour this weekend before leaving today for Maine.

Coach Tony Carlstrom said he was very pleased with Cordovano's race and is looking forward to the nationals.

"It was great to see our team have such good results today," Carlstrom said. "We finally got a win on the tour, and it was really nice to see Spencer get one this season. He's been training really hard, stayed focused, and hasn't had all the breaks, so it was good to see one go his way."

Fellow sophomore Lance Lynch took sixth place in the boardercross.

Carlstrom said conditions were tough at Sno Mountain, which featured cold, fast and icy conditions, similar to what he is expecting in Maine at the nationals.

Nationals feature both the men's and women's teams starting Wednesday, when each are in slopestyle action.

Carlstrom said the Revolution Tour will help the team hone its skill in the slopestyle since the team is traditionally strong in the slalom and giant slalom events.

Thursday and Friday's boarder-X event also will feature members of both teams. Then, the team will get to strut its specialty on Saturday, as both sides will compete in slalom and giant slalom.

Carlstrom said the team benefited from increased competition this year.

"There were a lot of good kids that have joined the (USCSA Great West) league that are really good and we're finally getting some competition. We used to just smash teams and now the field is sort of testing us. I'm excited to see what we're going to do at nationals," Carlstrom said.
