New hangar at Minden airport
Minden-Tahoe Airport is to be the home of a new upscale 87.5 acre hangar complex, announced Piñón Aero Center, LLC, of Minden. The center will ultimately consist of 100 hangars offering 1,000,000 square feet of space to accommodate the hangar demands of the general aviation flying public in the hangar-space-starved communities surrounding Lake Tahoe and in the Carson City area.
The Piñón Aero Center's 87.5 acre hangar development is a major addition to the Minden-Tahoe Airport of Douglas County.
It will add about 100 high-end hangars, Hangar-Suites, to the amenities of the airport to complement the multi-purpose general aviation charter of this FAA supported facility.
The Minden-Tahoe Airport is a significant asset to Nevada general aviation. It offers a wide range of flying activities: A world renowned glider-soaring destination attracting athletes from around the world, an aviation center for local flying enthusiasts and a hangar complex for local aircraft. The demand for general aviation facilities has grown steadily, and in the West, the ability of airports to support hangar demand has been outstripped. Minden-Tahoe has the natural setting, ideal landing-takeoff characteristics, and expansion space-990 acres-for airport growth. In fact, the FAA has recognized it as one of three most viable airports in Nevada.
Piñón Aero Center was granted a 50-year lease by Douglas County to develop a hangar community at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. The Piñón Aero Center commenced ground breaking in February with the first phase to be completed by late summer of 2008.
Nevada Commission on Tourism signs mutual cooperation agreement
The Nevada Commission on Tourism is among 13 western states that have signed a historic agreement with U.S. government agencies pledging mutual cooperation in promoting tourism on federal lands while protecting natural, historic and cultural resources, Director Tim Maland announced today.
The Western States Tourism Policy Council and key leaders of nine federal agencies signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding in Washington, D.C., Feb. 29, recommitting to a strategy of mutual support, coordination and cooperation. The MOU renews and expands similar agreements originally signed in 1997 and renewed in 2001.
"Tourism is Nevada's No. 1 economic engine, and many of our most popular visitor attractions are on federally managed land," Maland said. "This historic agreement will benefit Nevada and other states and communities throughout the West that depend on business generated by tourism, which sustains state and local economies."
The WSTPC, formed in 1996, is a consortium of 13 western state tourism offices: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Its mission is to support public policies and programs that enable travel and tourism to provide maximum economic and environmental benefits to the states and communities of the West.

North Tahoe gains attention for culinary fare
North Lake Tahoe may not be as well known for its innovative cuisine as it is for its recreation, but its niche for culinary tourism has grown steadily as those who come to play expect more from their dining experience.
According to the Travel Industry Association of America, 17 percent of U.S. leisure travelers, or 27.3 million, have engaged in culinary or wine related activities while traveling. In addition to a complete palette of innovative menus from creative chefs, businesses have stepped up to meet the needs of today's discerning travelers.
On the food front, the combination of inspired cuisine and a must-visit destination put Lake Tahoe on media guru Rachael Ray's radar, who recently featured the area on an episode of "Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels." Chefs from the Lone Eagle Grille in Incline Village, Gar Woods Grill and Pier in Carnelian Bay, Tahoe City's Jake's on the Lake, Sunnyside Lodge and Fire Sign Café on the West Shore and the Log Cabin in Kings Beach all stepped in front of the camera to prepare their signature dishes.
"Visitors everywhere have become food-savvy," Bill Hoffman, executive director of the Incline Village Crystal Bay Visitors Bureau, said. "People aren't just satisfied with a day on the ski slopes. They want to complete it with an incredible meal and fine wines. Our restaurants and businesses make that abundantly available."
Winter food events and festivals are uniquely combined with outdoor excursions, such as Last Tracks at Diamond Peak, which allows skiers and snowboarders to enjoy appetizers and wine tasting at the end of the day then carve down freshly groomed slopes with astounding views of Lake Tahoe.
