REMSA dispute update
A dispute is drawing to a close between the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority.

Chief Mike Brown said at Wednesday's fire board of directors meeting that the dispute over transporting victims from the Mt. Rose Ski Area by ambulance is close to resolution.

The Washoe County District Board of Health, which contracts REMSA for ambulance services, asked the NLTFPD to stop transporting patients from the ski area because they claimed it lay in REMSA's jurisdiction. The Health Board threatened litigation if the fire district didn't stop transportation.

"Our biggest concern has been patient care," Brown said. "So I've been working with (REMSA president) Patrick Smith on a way to solve the issue, and he agrees with me about patient care being the No. 1 priority."

Brown said he hopes to reach a solution by April's board meeting.

NLTFPD paramedic

to teach at REMSA

Battalion Chief Mike Schwartz announced at Wednesday's North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District Board of Directors meeting that firefighter/paramedic Casey Quinlan would be assisting as an instructor at the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority's paramedic school.

He said Quinlan's promotion is part of a deal with REMSA to supply an instructor in return for NLTFPD personnel to train with their paramedic program. Quinlan and Schwartz will select four firefighters each year to study at the program and receive their paramedic's certifications.

"It's a really great program for us because REMSA gets great internships being in the Reno area," Schwartz said.
