Incline Village resident Mike Guymon and his son, Michael G. Guymon, competed in the University of California at Los Angeles Iron Bruin Triathlon on March 2 in Los Angeles.
The course consisted of a 400 meter swim, 13.5 mile bike ride, and a 2.5 mile run, and Michael Guymon, at 10-years-old, was the youngest competitor in the event's history. It features 261 competitors, male and female.
Michael, who competed in the men's collegiate division, finished the event with a time of 2 hours 37 minutes and 14 seconds, good for an overall finish of 259 out of 261.
His times one-upped his father Mike, whose overall time of 2:39:14 was good for 260th place.
Michael received the Rudy Award, for being the youngest person ever to finish the Iron Bruin.
The duo trained at the Incline Village Recreation Center pool, and took many bike rides and hikes throughout Incline and the North Shore to prepare for the event.
"Michael's longest ride was from Incline Village to Sand Harbor to Kings Beach and back to Incline Village (one day)," Mike Guymon said. "Michael likes to hike and walk around Incline Village as well. It was a natural progression for him to participate in the triathlon because he is so enthusiastic."
Mike said his son plans to compete in more triathlons, including the Pyramid Lake Triathlon.
"Michael is learning Olympic sports and someday wants to enter the decathlon," Mike Guymon said.
