The Relay for Life is a celebration of the battle against cancer and those who have survived it.
Incline Village's Relay for Life is scheduled for Aug. 15 and 16, at Preston Field, but to earn the celebration participants are being asked to raise funds between now and then.
At 6 p.m. on April 11 at the Hacienda de la Sierra restaurant, the Incline Relay for Life will host its annual kickoff party to start a season of fundraising and organizing teams.
"You know, the relay is really a celebration after people put in a lot of hard work," said Jennifer Archey, community relationship manager with the American Cancer Society.
She said the kickoff will include a team registration rally, where people can sign up themselves and 10 to 15 friends on a team to raise money in the fight against cancer.
"People don't even need to have a full team right then. They can just come and say, I'll find people, I'll get my friends and family together and we'll do a team," Archey said.
Team registration will also be offered at a 50 percent discounted rate at the kickoff party.
Archey said people will receive a quick course in fundraising at the event, which she expects to last about an hour.
"Some people are timid or don't really know where to start when they are fundraising," Archey said. "We can give them some pointers to help them through that."
Archey said that she is also looking for people interested in being members of the Relay's planning committee.
She said committee members are relied upon to organize every aspect of the event.
The annual Relay for Life event will take place on Aug. 15 and 16 at Preston Field in Incline. Anyone interested in joining the committee is encouraged to call Archey at (775) 329-0600.
