Truly the right choice

The Incline Village General Improvement District Board of Trustees made the right decision on Wednesday when it tabled any further discussion on the district's recreation pass and punch card ordinance.

And board chair Bea Epstein put it best after the meeting: "The issue with Ordinance No. 7 is about equity," she said.

Ever since the board-appointed Ordinance No. 7 committee made public its proposed changes, there has been a lot of commentary in our opinion pages and within IVGID board correspondence, asking questions about the proposals.

Further commentary ensued about misconceptions involving the intent of a part of the proposal involving golf privileges, a misconception that we made the mistake of enhancing with the poll question on our Web site this past week. We apologize for one of the answers being misleading, and we have eliminated the question from our site, in the interests of accuracy.

Back to the ordinance, the initial goal when the committee gathered in January was to bring a proposal to the board for it to approve or disapprove by May 15, the deadline for changes to be written into the district's 2008-2009 fiscal budget.

But as the months wound down, it was apparent trustees and committee members realized that simply wasn't going to happen.

So, rather than rushing and compiling some legalese together to meet an unrealistic deadline, letting this issue stir for another year turns out to be the best option.

While some may be disappointed that any changes will have to wait another year, this truly is the right way to go - it's the safe, rather than sorry approach.

By extending discussion on this, it gives more time for community feedback, especially for our large summer population, Many of whom use the golf courses and beaches, which are a large part of Ordinance No. 7.

On Jan. 16, the Bonanza published an editorial titled, "The right choice," and we lauded the board for starting the committee, and we urged the committee to meet the May 15 deadline.

But the board's decision to do this the right way makes Wednesday's decision truly the right choice.
