Art’s coffee shop uses walls for student art
Craving a cup of joe and some intriguing art to peruse while you sip? Look no further than Art’s Coffeehouse inside the Village Market in the Village Center on Southwood Boulevard.
The coffeehouse has opened up its walls up to the community and most recently to student artists at Incline High and Elementary schools.
“We thought having the student’s art up is a way to give the students the motivation to create art,” said Sarah Elkins, Art’s store manager.
Elkins said she approached the art departments at Incline High School, Incline Middle School and Sierra Nevada College to involve the students and teachers in the project.
“We sent out some e-mails and had a meeting of the minds and we wanted to make sure the art program worked for everyone’s benefit,” Elkins said.
For the past month art from Incline High School’s beginning art class has hung on the walls of the local coffee shop. The art included different self portraits.
“It’s a great opportunity and gives the students a lot of exposure,” said Incline High School art teacher Ann Clark. “They realize a lot of people are seeing it and getting comments and enjoying the art.”
Starting today the coffeehouse will display art from the Incline Middle School’s art classes. The display will last until May 15.
After that the store’s walls are open to students or other community members.
Clark said she considered presenting some of her student’s two-dimensional architectural bas-reliefsAnnie Flanzraich 4/17/08 .
“They studied architecture and did some reliefs based on some famous architectural structures,” Clark said. “We may put that up this summer.”
Elkins said she’s also thought about opening up the walls to art teachers and professors in the community.
“We want to be the local’s coffee shop,” Elkins said. “This is one way of giving back to the community and getting people exposure.”
