Missing runner found safe after night outdoors in Sierra west of Tahoe

FORESTHILL, Calif. (AP) — An endurance runner who went missing during a training run in the Sierra foothills has been rescued after spending a night in near-freezing temperatures.

Helicopters spotted 40-year-old Daniel Rose early Monday huddled under a yellow tarp on a footbridge near Foresthill, about 45 miles northeast of Sacramento. A helicopter lifted him to safety.

Rose, of Orangevale, became separated from his group while training for a 100-mile run this summer. He was wearing only shorts and a T-shirt as temperatures dropped into the low-30s overnight.

Placer County Sheriff's deputies and U.S. Forest Service crews spent the night searching for Rose on the Western States trail, which runs from Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe to Auburn.
