Chris Spheeris to give benefit concert
Award-winning, international recording star Chris Spheeris will perform at 7:30 p.m., May 10, at the Cal Neva. This is a benefit concert/art show for Arts For The School, a nonprofit organization that enhances local children’s education and fosters a lifelong love of the creative arts.
Spheeris’ distinctive musical talents helped to pioneer the New Age instrumental music movement. His musical style has been described as candid and lighthearted as well as deeply philosophical. This rare solo performance will consist of original vocals as well as instrumental pieces that have gained Spheeris an international following.
The event also will launch a new multi-media performance that fuses art and music.
Beginning at 6 p.m. ticket holders can browse and purchase Spheeris’ original digital media pieces. Spheeris art explores multiple mediums including giclees, prints, metals, fabrics and ceramics. For Goodness Sake of Truckee, Calif. sponsors the event and a percentage of the proceeds from art purchases will go to Art For the Schools.
“My father first introduced photography to me as a boy and my art now is a visual and physical extension of my musical messages,” Spheeris said from his home in Sedona, Ariz.

This event will be a kick-off for a nationwide series of benefit events.
Doors open at 6 p.m. for the art show, the concert is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children. They are available at the door or at For Goodness Sake, 10157 Donner Pass Road in Truckee, Calif. For information and tickets call (530) 550-8981. GPS for Mariners
Feeling a little lost these days? Let the Coast Guard Auxiliary help you find your way! The USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 11-01 of North Lake Tahoe is offering a GPS For Mariners class from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, Coast Guard Station Tahoe. The class will include a combination of classroom and hands-on outside instruction covering all the basics of how to use your GPS, how the GPS system operates as well as typical menus and applications such as how to set up your GPS, create and go to waypoints, staying on course, how to create routes and establishing “breadcrumb” trails to help backtrack or re-enter tricky areas. Will teach the use of the Man Overboard feature and relate it all to a nautical chart. While oriented to the mariner, this class is also useful for hikers, hunters, geo-caching fans and anyone who uses a GPS. (It is not for people still trying to figure out the GPS in their car!) Coffee and pastries will be offered in the morning, but plan to bring a sack lunch of your own. Bring your handheld GPS and its instruction book. A few GPS’s will be available for those who do not have one of their own. The registration fee for the course is $45, which includes the text and chart. Dress The Part(y) fashion show fundraiser supports Safe and Sober Grad Night
The current charity supported by Dress The Part(y) is Incline High School’s Safe and Sober Grad Night. Every purchase supports the seniors and their graduation night event, a midnight cruise on San Francisco Bay. Several moms are planning to dress in vintage prom attire. Senior boys and dads will escort the models dressed in tuxes and fashion attire. Anyone wishing to help may donate gently used designer gowns, prom dresses and tuxes to be sold at a “prom boutique” before and after the Prom Fashion Show. All proceeds will go to the Safe and Sober Grad Night Fund. Bring your donations to Dress The Part(y) during business hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday. Incline Village Community Hospital Foundation receives funding for Breast Health Education and Mammography Program
Incline Village Community Hospital Foundation, in partnership with North Lake Tahoe and Truckee Family Resource Centers, received funding for the second year for its Breast Health Education and Mammography Program, designed to reach medically underserved women in the local community.
Family Resource Centers see hundreds of women annually and will incorporate breast health education into their curriculum to identify and refer eligible women to Incline Village Community Hospital and Tahoe Forest Hospital for mammograms, and in some cases ultrasound, which will be covered by this grant for a second year.  Komen for the Cure was very pleased with the results from the first year of funding, and remarked that the hospital foundation and the family resource center partnership is one of the most innovative programs they have ever funded.
Komen for the Cure raises its grant dollars primarily from its annual event “Race for the Cure.”  The dollars raised go back to the communities that participate in the race. The 2008 race will be held Sunday, October 5, at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Incline Village Community Hospital Foundation will be forming a team shortly, and encourages the community to come out and help find a cure for the many sisters, mothers, daughters, wives and friends who have been afflicted by breast cancer.
For more information on the Komen Foundation grant, or if you would like to join the Incline Village Community Hospital Foundation’s team, please call (775) 888-4204.
