Heading into Wednesday’s game against Portola High School, the Incline High School varsity softball team had a chance to close the season on a nine-game win streak.

Now the Lady Highlanders are going to have to settle for two wins in a row.
Incline dropped to 12-4 on the season after suffering an 11-8 loss Wednesday at Portola High School, despite a late-inning rally that saw Incline score eight runs in the final three innings, and despite out-hitting the Lady Tigers 13-10.

“This hurts. This really hurts,” said IHS coach Del Youngblood. “They totally out-played us and out-hit us. They aren’t the better team, but they were ready for us, and they wanted it more. And we didn’t deliver.”

The Lady Tigers pounced all over IHS senior Ashley Ford’s pitching, as they built a 9-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. Ford dropped to 8-3 on the season with the loss.

She gave up nine runs, seven hits and three walks in the first four innings.
“The starting pitching was awful; she got behind the hitters, she had the catcher moving all over the place to field the balls — she just wasn’t prepared,” Youngblood said.

Offensively, Youngblood said the team thrived, albeit not being able to score until the fifth inning.

Lauren Wilson led the team on offense, going 4-4, while Tracy Estrada, Anisha Wilson and Michaela Wright each had two hits. Rebecca Corpuel, Lindsey Iida and Tori McCunn also had hits for Incline.

Offsetting the offense was poor pitching and fielding, as Incline committed seven errors Wednesday, Youngblood said.

“You’re not going to win when you commit three errors, let alone seven,” he said.
Incline closes the season with a doubleheader Saturday against Pershing County High School (Lovelock).

Youngblood said he doesn’t anticipate his team to play as sloppy this weekend.
“If we play Saturday the way we played (Wednesday), we’ll get annihilated,” Youngblood said. “I told the girls this is our championship game. This is our playoff game. And (Wednesday) was a big wake-up call for us.”

Saturday’s games are at noon and 2 p.m. at Incline Middle School.
