A historical plaque regarding Incline Village will be dedicated at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Village Center by the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus, Chief Truckee Chapter #3691.
The plaque’s inscription will read, “Incline Village — This community sprang from a forested portion of the estate of George Whittell, eccentric millionaire. The Crystal Bay Development Company began the development in 1958 and Boise Cascade completed the basic community by 1968. In all, 9,000 acres became what you see today. From 1967 - 2004, the Ponderosa Ranch, a theme park based on a setting from the hit TV show “Bonanza,” operated two miles to the east, as an international attraction on the site of the village’s namesake, “The Great Incline of the Sierra Nevada.” The incline hoisted lumber from a mill near lake level to a flume and tunnel system for transport to Washoe Valley and the Comstock mines from 1880 - 1899.” The plaque was first dedicated Aug. 11, 1990 and will be rededicated May 10, 2008 by the Truckee chapter of E Clampus Vitus.
The plaque will be placed between the entrances of the U.S. Post Office and the Village Market.
Any questions can be referred to Bo Pollard at (775) 833-3555.
