With National Bike to Work Week just a few days away, local coffee shops and businesses are coming out in strong support for the event.
And the Incline Village General Improvement District is getting in on the act. On Friday, May 16, the final day of Bike to Work Week, the Incline Village Recreation Center will host a coffee stop with coffee, fruit and muffins from 6:30 to 10 a.m. In all, seven local coffee shops will be offering free coffee or discounted espresso drinks to riders each day of Bike to Work Week.
Other businesses are supporting the ride through cash donations or raffle prizes. Each day that participants ride, they will be entered into a drawing. Some of the donated prizes include ski lift tickets, overnight hotel stays, bike tune-ups, or dinners at local restaurants. A grant from the Nevada Bicycle Advisory Board also helped support the purchase of Bike to Work banners.
“We had a lot of great support from local businesses last year, and we have even more this year,” said Karen Fink, Transportation Planner at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. “Everyone we have contacted has been very enthusiastic about helping out.”
Several local agencies are also supporting their own internal Bike to Work Challenges. The U.S. Forest Service, TRPA, and South Tahoe Refuse are three agencies that are holding weekly or monthly drawings with prizes to encourage their employees to ride to work all summer long.
As of Wednesday, 330 riders and 25 teams have signed up for this year’s challenge. New teams this year include the South Tahoe High School and the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.
There is still time to sign up. For more information about Bike to Work Month, to sign up for the challenge or to be a sponsor, please see the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition’s Web site: http://www.tahoebike.org or contact Fink at (775) 588-4547, ext. 204.
