Holets could qualify for state
By the time you read this, the Incline High School varsity boys golf team could have a state qualifier.
The boys competed in their final meet of the regular season Thursday at Grizzly Ranch Golf Club in Portola, and while results were unavailable as of press time, coach Joe Humasti said a few golfers could have a chance at qualifying for next week’s state tournament.
Leading the pack is junior Justin Holets, a golfer Humasti said has stepped up as a leader this year on a team that has no seniors.
“He has a good shot at making state,” Humasti said. “He’s right in the middle, maybe No. 3, of the top five individuals.”
For 3A boys golf, there is no zone tournament to see which teams and individuals qualify for state. The top three teams from the Northern 3A, based on regular season play, advance to the tournament, which is Tuesday and Wednesday at Mesquite Country Club. Furthermore, the top five individual golfers not on one of the qualifying teams also will advance.
To qualify, whether as a team or individual, the top seven of nine meet scores are counted. Thursday’s meet will be the seventh in which Holets is expected to score, Humasti said, meaning he is in position to move on. Incline did not compete enough as a team this year to be in contention.
While it isn’t likely, Humasti said IHS sophomore Sam Witt and Tommy Annese also could qualify as individuals.
Grizzly Ranch is a tough course that will test his team, Humasti said. “It’s a tough course,” he said. “It requires a lot of thinking; you can’t just go out and bang it.”
Check Sunday’s Bonanza for a full recap of Thursday’s meet in Portola, as well as a possible look ahead to state.
Humasti said Holets put himself in contention to advance to state with a solid showing at the team’s last meet, May 2 at Edgewood Country Club, as he shot an 82. Humasti said his young team is benefiting from finishing the season playing at Edgewood and Grizzly Ranch.
“They are finishing on some pretty good golf courses, and that sets them up well for state,” Humasti said.
