From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13, the parking lot of the Tahoe Biltmore Casino in Crystal Bay will become one giant canvas for local and visiting artists to display their talent through the long-time tradition of Italian Street Painting.
A free event, open to the public and celebrating its 10th anniversary, this years Tahoe Arts Festivals Italian Street Painting is expected to be one of the largest street painting gatherings in the region. The cornerstone of the festival is street painting.
An Italian tradition since the 16th century, street painting – using chalk as the medium – is enjoying a renaissance in cities throughout Europe and the United States.
Called I madonnari because of their practice of reproducing the image of the Madonna, the early Italian street painters were vagabonds who would arrive in small towns and villages and transform the sidewalks and public squares into temporary galleries for their ephemeral works of art.
With the first rains of the season, their paintings would be gone.
The Tahoe Arts Festival is proud to bring this romantic art form to the Tahoe Biltmore.
The Tahoe Arts Festival places thousands of sticks of pastel chalks in the hands of its Amadonnari, Italian for street painter, who are local artists from throughout California and Nevada as well as visiting artists from as far away as Idaho and Connecticut.
They spend two days on hands and knees creating spectacular paintings in every style imaginable on Asquares@ ranging in size from 4x6 feet to 12x12 feet. Guests will also be treated to an Artist Marketplace featuring hand-crafted items, live entertainment and delicious food offerings.
Children can get into the creative act in Chalkland, a specially designated area for kids and families, where children will have the chance to create their very own street art. Clowns will provide balloon art and face painting. Smooth jazz and other musical styles will also be provided. At the conclusion of the festival, the artwork will be judged and $2,000 in prize money will be distributed to the winning paintings in each size category.
The event is made possible with major sponsorship from the Incline Village/Crystal Bay Visitors Bureau, the Tahoe Biltmore and Charter Media. Other sponsors include Atomic Printing, PrintArt and Northstar-at-Tahoe. For information, call (530)583-5605 or e-mail info@laketahoeartsfestival.com.
