It’s that time again. The Kids and Horses fundraiser will take place Sept. 13 at the Crystal Bay Casino. The event theme is “Kids Helping Kids,” and features the “American Idol” style contest known as Sierra Star Search.

Doug Brimm, executive director of the Kids and Horses program, said the theme is an opportunity for the young people competing to showcase their talent and help handicapped children at the same time.

The Sierra Star Search auditions will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 and Aug. 28 at Incline High School. The auditions will be an open-call for contestants from the middle and high schools of Incline Village, North Tahoe and Truckee.

Each contestant is asked to prepare a four-minute song that will be performed before judges. The judges will select the contestants to appear at the Sept. 13 fundraiser and compete for prizes.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners from the “American Idol” format, by the audience applause. The prize the contestants will be competing for are:

• $2,500 for First Place

• $1,500 for Second Place

• $1,000 for Third Place

One of last year’s participants, Casey Canino, said she selected a song that she felt presented her well and was one that she knew.

“I sang ‘Unafraid’ by Joy Williams because it is about not being afraid of challenges,” she said.

The winner of last year’s Sierra Star Search was Incline High School’s Haley Forsyth, now a soon-to-be sophomore. She sang, “Somewhere over the Rainbow.”

Canino also said the entire event was a fun experience and had been an opportunity for her to meet other singers in the area. She also recommends it to anyone interested in competing.

“It was very well organized and put together,” Canino said.

“We had a lot of feedback from last year and we are changing the format a little by having a four minute time limit,”said Judie Brooks, who is heading the auditions.

The Kids and Horses program is a unique opportunity for children with disabilities to learn leadership skills, improve their strength, balance, coordination and self-esteem. The program was started in 1999 by Sam Waldman of Incline Village and has helped children with cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism and other disabilities.

This is the second year the fundraiser will take place at the Crystal Bay Club. Last year’s event raised $65,000.

The event will feature a Western style barbecue, entertainment, raffle prizes and a silent and live auction, along with the Sierra Star Search finals. The evening begins at 5 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Crystal Bay Club. Brimm’s Catering Company and Austin’s restaurant are providing the barbecue. Tickets are $15 for kids, 12 and under and $30 for adults, and they can be purchased at Bowl Incline, Austin’s Restaurant in Reno or Incline Village, Century 21 McGregor Realty, Ponderosa Property Management, Double W Ranch or at the event.

Tables for groups or organizations can also be purchased.
