Thankful for all of the Tahoe support

The title of the July 11 Bonanza article about my accident was confusing to me at first. “Local woman to make full recovery.” Those words just do not refer to me. I am a kid, just down here in Tahoe to snowboard, and now I find myself, after two years, still here. Tahoe is a traveler’s paradise — changing people, changing seasons, and I guess I never took myself out of that transient mindset. Similar to the effect of Peter Pan’s Neverland?

Well what an unfortunate wakeup call my accident was. I can say that this experience has been the most tragic of my life so far. Simply, this sucks.

Although, looking back these few weeks, it’s impossible to dwell on the hospital nights, painful X-rays and the even more painful hospital food. I had my friends to share their strength with me every day and soften the harsh white walls of my room. Back home now in the mountains in Incline, the energy is multiplied, my body is healing at a rate that shocks me daily and I know it would not be the same under any other circumstances.

I am one of those who believe everything happens for a reason, and so my eyes have been opened to my current situation. It is not one of pity nor pain; I feel I am in a situation of abundance. The support that I have been given by my community is overwhelming and will carry me through this. School will commence in spring rather than fall, and I will enjoy one more autumn in the beautiful Sierra Nevada before making my move to Humboldt State University.

Much has changed in my mind since the day of my accident, and with newfound determination, I have set my goals once again on a degree in kinesiology. I look forward to the summer vacations I plan to spend back with my aunt here in Incline and the winters when I will again be able to snowboard at Alpine Meadows.

My employers Dave Kellenberger and Justin Garcia have showed me what family means in Tahoe — the dinner that was hosted (July 21 at Lanza’s Italian Restaurant) in my honor was such a generous act, and without you guys, during this time I would be lost.

To my friend Kevin MacMillan, thank you for also allowing me an emotional release I did not know was there, for providing me an opportunity to break the poker face I held through surgeries and discussions with my doctors. Your words and continuing support mean a lot.

And Aunt Lorrie, thank you for things I cannot explain and the things only you understand! Our friendship through this has revealed itself to be unparalleled and I am so thankful to have your spirit by my side.

It has been difficult to summon appropriate words that express my gratitude to this community, my friends, family, employers and co-workers. With the huge support and energy I have taken from you all, I am healing a different person.

I now see the woman recovering from an incident that changed my life, but, for reasons still unknown, did not take it.

Always I will consider myself a Lake Tahoe Local, and wouldn’t ask for anything else. For your help during this time — thank you all.
