SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Pro beach volleyball is returning to the South Shore.

After a two-year absence, the Extreme Volleyball Players Tour will deliver the pro beach game to the community on Friday and Saturday.

The Association of Volleyball Professionals tour visited Stateline, Nev. in September of 2006 for the Lake Tahoe Best of the Beach tournament.

Olympic stars Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh participated in that event.

EVP’s top 30 men and women athletes will bump it up for a $5,000 purse at Lakeside Beach, located behind the Stateline hotels. The preliminary round for the two-on-two tournament is at 1 p.m. Friday on two courts. The single-elimination finals are from 9 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

EVP is one of the primary volleyball tours in the United States, with more than 10,000 athletes who compete at 20 destinations from March through October.

Carrie Wright is one of the EVP’s top players, collecting four titles since joining the tour in 2006.Former Jacksonville University player Tara Kuk, now a physical education teacher and volleyball coach at Palm Harbor University High School in Palm Harbor, Fla., tops the women’s standings this summer. Wright, who stands sixth, was All-West Coast Conference at Pepperdine University all four years and was a former AVP competitor.

“I fell in love with Lake Tahoe years ago when I went on a winter vacation,” Wright said. “I can only imagine the colors of the mountains and beautiful vegetation reflecting off of the lake in the summertime. We just can't wait to get there, tour around and, of course, get in some competitive volleyball action on the beaches of Lake Tahoe.”

Two two-day tournament will be televised by Comcast Sports Net and begin airing on Sept. 14.
