Travel to Italy for a month for free with Rotary district

Italy is a must-see travel destination for many Americans. Whether it’s heritage, history or a hefty interest in the cuisine, Americans are drawn to the boot-shaped nation.

Rotary International, which includes both Incline Village-based Rotaries, is offering a free trip to Italy as a part of their Good Student Exchange program.

The month-long trip, which would leave the U.S. in May 2009 and return in June offers young business professionals, between the ages of 25 and 40, a chance to spend a month in Italy on Rotary’s dime.

“The applicants would go to our Rotary partnership district in Italy to study and work in their field of expertise,” said Scott Schmitt, the DSE chair for Rotary District 5190, which includes Incline Village. “It would be a great experience and they would be expected to serve as ambassadors for Rotary, and more importantly, the United States.”

Schmitt said participants would stay in the homes of Italian Rotarians to get a feel for the regional culture.

They would be limited, Schmitt said, to the Italian Rotary district they are assigned.

But, Schmitt said, the district is quite large and would provide a good cross-section of Italian life.

Schmitt said he is hoping to select four from a growing list of applicants for the trip.

Interested people still have time to sign-up, Schmitt said, by visiting the Rotary district Web site at www.rotarydistrict5190.org and filling out an application, faxing him at (530) 274-8138 or calling him at 530-263-1273. Applications are due on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Schmitt said Rotary hopes to select between four and six Italian professionals for the “exchange” end of DSE. He said the finalists will be selected in October.

In preparation for the exchange, the American participants will need to attend a series of lectures and workshops designed to familiarize them with Italian and the culture in Italy.

Schmitt said the workshops were successful last year in preparation for the same trip to Brazil.
