Take one look at the 2008 Incline High School varsity volleyball team during practice, and you’ll notice something significantly different from last season.
Something different beside the fact there’s a new coach and the team is sans six graduated seniors, including its triple threat co-captain core in Lisa Elsworth, Holly O’Connor and Natalie Hale.
There was something noticeably changed about the girls as practice wound down Friday at the high school — many were out of breath.
“Practice is quick and fast, all the time. There’s no time for laziness; there’s no walking. There’s nothing slow about volleyball, so there’s nothing slow about practice,” said Tacy Kelly, who is beginning her first year as head coach after spending the past few seasons assisting the team and former coach Heidi Graeber. “I am hard on them; I don’t let them get away with anything, but I do give them leeway, too, when they earn it.”
It’s not taking long for the girls to notice the up tempo pace. And for the most part, they’re buying into it.
Ask Jitana Alba, one of the team’s seven seniors in 2008, a girl who will be relied on to help lead a team that lost an experienced coach and an experienced core group of seniors.
“We know we need to step up, and we’re prepared to do that,” Alba said. “And coach is pushing us a lot to do that.”
Part of that hard work is for conditioning, Kelly said. But the other half lies behind a push for a positive and disciplined attitude, Kelly said, something the team maybe didn’t fully believe in a year ago.
“They listen really well, and they are coming to practice with a great attitude,” Kelly said. “Every day is different for every human being; sometimes you’re just not up for it. But they help you get through that practice that bad day. It’s all about trusting your teammates; that’s a big thing I’m teaching.
“That’s straight up the first thing — if you come to practice with a bad attitude and you’re complaining, that’s unacceptable. Attitude is No. 1. It’s about being positive, and that’s really the best way to look at life.”
The Lady Highlanders enter the season almost a completely different group. Sure there are returning players, but there is a new coach and a lot of new players.
Senior Sara Norris, considered by many as one of the better volleyball players in Northern Nevada, said the team is adjusting to a different environment this season, an adjustment she said should develop easily over the next couple weeks.
“We’re learning how to play with each other; it’s a whole new set up this year,” Norris said. “But we just like to play; all the girls like each other and get a long well, so that’s great.”
Junior Shanna Murray said the team shouldn’t struggle too much in its 2008 transition, adding that the loss of six seniors from last year shouldn’t be viewed as a negative.
“I think it’s a big motivator for this year, and we have girls ready to step up in those roles,” Murray said “I’m looking at this like it’s a whole new season.”
As for a starting lineup this season, Kelly still isn’t sold on one. She holds high praise for seniors Norris and Rachel Riva, who at 6 feet 1 inch and 5 feet 11 inches, respectively, could contribute well at the middle blocker position.
Also, Kelly sees Murray as a good candidate for starting center, with Alba a strong choice for one of the outside hitter positions.
From there, however, some decisions need to be made, some of which could come at this weekend’s Yerington Tournament, Kelly said.
“We’re going to try all kinds of different stuff,” Kelly said. “We’re going to try different rotations and put them out of position a lot and see how they handle it.”
The tournament, which takes place Friday and Saturday at Yerington High School, features 16 teams. Incline will play Spring Creek, Smith Valley and Yerington high schools in pool play.
After that, the team kicks off the 2008 season with a big test — a 4 p.m. Tuesday match at North Tahoe High School.
One team Incline won’t face this year, considering Incline is a full-on 2A school now, is 3A powerhouse and defending 3A state champion Truckee High School, the team that swept Incline three times in 2007, including once in the zone tournament.
When asked if not having to play the Lady Wolverines this season could be viewed as a positive, Kelly quickly shook her head.
“I like playing hard teams, teams that are challenging,” Kelly said. “I think it humbles you, but it makes you better to play against the best.”
As for any expectations for 2008, for Kelly, they are simple.
“The only expectation I have this season is for the girls to really learn to play together and trust each other,” Kelly said. “They need to be able to congratulate each other, be excited for each other after someone makes a nice kill or an ace or a dig.
“Once that comes along, we’ll win.”

Season recap: 2007 IHS girls volleyball
In 2007, the Incline High School varsity volleyball team was a mature bunch, led by six seniors, including senior co-captains Natalie Hale, Holly O’Connor and Lisa Elsworth.
After a tough start, the girls started to win matches, but never could get the big win against the top 3A teams in Yerington and Truckee high schools.
Incline entered the 2007 Northern 3A zone tournament as the No. 4 seed. After a three-game sweep of Dayton High School, the girls struggled in the semifinal match against Truckee, losing in three games and ousting them from the playoffs.
