Residents and frequenters of Ski Way in Incline Village should start to see substantial upward development take place over the next month on a new lodge at Incline Villages ski resort.
Workers with Al Shankle Construction are continuing work on phase one of a two-year Diamond Peak Renovation Project, which is the $4 million Diamond Peak Base Lodge renovation. They will lay the last pieces of steel next week, and from there, the new lodge will begin to take shape, said Brad Johnson, Incline Village General Improvement District engineering director.
Theres still a lot of work to do but we anticipate the third and final steel delivery to be put in place sometime next week, Johnson said. But once the last of the steel is in, then everyone will start to see things move quickly. The remainder of the third floor walls will go up, the roof will go up theyll really start to see a shell of a building over the next 60 days.
The Diamond Peak Base Lodge renovation includes a major facilities upgrade to its main lodge. Among the new amenities, there will be new restrooms in the Loft Bar area, a 300 square foot banquet room for special events on the upper level and a new food service counter.
In all, the Diamond Peak Renovation is a two-year project totaling $7.5 million. Phase one of the renovation started in May and accounts for a little more than $4 million of the total amount projected.
The goal remains, as it has all spring and summer, to finish work by Nov. 1.
The project hasnt been without its challenges, but were still on time and were still on budget to meet the Nov. 1 deadline, Johnson said. There may be some last-minute touch up paint jobs, and obviously were going to be heavily involved in moving in a lot of equipment, but well be substantially done by Nov. 1.
From a base lodge standpoint, we dont anticipate any impact on the resorts opening day.
That tentative opening day this year is Dec. 11, said Kayla Anderson, marketing coordinator for the Incline Village General Improvement District. Furthermore, the tentative first day for the resort to begin making snow is Oct. 22, Anderson said.
If the temperatures are cold enough, well begin making snow, she said.
As base lodge renovation moves forward, so too does preparations for the 2008/2009 ski season, Anderson said. Diamond Peaks summer staff has worked since the day after closing in April 16, preparing the resort for the upcoming winter season.
Summer work revolves much around assessing and repairing various equipment on the mountain, including chair lifts, snow cat machines and snowmaking equipment. Workers also begin to season the ground with pine needles and other duff to revegetate bare spots on the mountain, which allows for erosion control.
Theyve been working hard maintaining the resort and making it safe in preparation for the next season, Anderson said.
The mountain also is working to get its winter staff in tact. To help with that, the resort is holding a job fair, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Child Ski Center.
Another date for snow enthusiasts to remember is Sept. 30, the final day of Diamond Peaks early bird season pass sale, a special that so far this year is doing well.
We dont have exact numbers, but I know they (sales) are way up from last year, Anderson said.
Diamond Peaks full pass non-resident rates include: $454 for an adult pass; $209 for college; $188 for youth (ages 13-17); $156 for child (ages 7-12), and $188 for senior (ages 60-69). Discounted rates are available for Incline/Crystal Bay residents.
