IHS Volleyball team wins five at tourney

The Incline High School volleyball team came into this season without six graduated seniors, a new coach and some questions about a finalized starting lineup.

While a rigid lineup may yet be undecided, the girls this past weekend showed their new coach some glimpses of what could be a promising season ahead.

The Lady Highlanders went 5-2 Friday and Saturday at the Yerington Tournament at Yerington High School, including a 4-0 showing on Saturday in the silver bracket.

“It went really well; the girls really came together as a team. They got a good taste of how to win and what it takes to win,” said first-year coach Tacy Kelly. “They got really excited, too. Our quote for the weekend was ‘energy,’ and the girls had great positive energy.”

On Friday, Incline beat Smith Valley and lost to Yerington and Spring Creek. On Saturday, Incline got wins over Mineral County (Hawthorne), Pershing County (Lovelock) and Battle Mountain before beating Silver Stage to win the silver bracket. South Tahoe High School won the tournament overall.

Kelly said the preseason tournament served as a good gauge for her team this year.

“We tried a lot of different things, different positions, and the girls adapted really well,” Kelly said. “We learned a lot this weekend, that we have a pretty well-rounded team. A lot of the girls can play other positions.”

The girls kicked off the season Tuesday night with a home match against North Tahoe High School. Results were unknown as of press time. Read Friday’s Bonanza for full coverage.
