Three tenors and a diva coming to Incline Village

Print Comment
The Village Church will be the site for a concert by tenors Jon Fay, Robert O’Brien and Steven Murdoch along with Soprano Jasmine Hinchman at 7 p.m on Saturday, Oct. 11.

These four accomplished singers will be accompanied by pianist Jason Stanton. The evening’s repertoire will include songs sung in Russian, Italian and Welch along with a smattering of Broadway and a bit of opera.

Jon Fay, a dramatic tenor, has performed more than 20 roles with major opera companies across the United States.

Mr. Fay has performed in Seattle, Phoenix, New York, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Chicago. Some roles include Turridu in “Cavallaria Rusticana,” Canio in “Pagliacci,” Don Jose in “Carmen,” Radames in “Aida,” Pinkerton in “Madame Butterfly,” Manrico in “Il Trovatore,” Don Alvarro in “La Forza Del Destino,” Cavaradossi in “Tosca,” Dick Johnson in “The Girl of the Golden West” and others.

Jon also performed the role of Sam in “Susannah” for PBS, and Bothwell in “Mary Queen of Scots” for a world premier in Chicago. Fay lives in Reno, is on the faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno, and teaches private voice lessons as well.

Robert O’Brien, a part-time resident of Incline Village, is an honors graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School. After a 28-year legal career, he retired in 1986 and has performed frequently as a soloist in oratorios, recitals and opera galas. He has been a member of both the Palm Beach Opera Chorus and the Nevada Opera Chorus and has performed numerous comprimario roles with both companies.

In 2004 O’Brien toured South America with the Yale Alumni Chorus performing as a soloist with leading Latin American symphony orchestras, including the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro and the Buenos Aires Philharmonic at the Teatro Colón.

In recent years, Mr. O’Brien has developed a particular interest in Welsh music. He appeared as a soloist in the opening concert of the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales in 2001, and has been a prizewinner in Welsh arts competitions in both the United States and Wales.

In September 2006, he was winner of the prestigious David G. Morris prize for semi-professional vocal soloists at the North American Festival of Wales.

R. Steven Murdoch, tenor, is the Controller for Fitzgeralds Casino/Hotel. He graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s of science in accounting. During his University time, he appeared in “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Once Upon a Mattress.” Steven has sung with the Sierra Nevada Master Chorale for more than 14 years both as soloist and chorus member.

He has also performed with the Nevada Opera chorus in many productions. He was Counsel for the Plaintiff in “Trial by Jury” with the Nevada Opera for Artown. He played the role of Sam Polk in the opera “Susannah” with the Lyric Opera Theatre at UNR. He performed the role of Jinx in “Forever Plaid” with the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company. His most recent role was Gaston in “La Traviata” with the Nevada Opera.

A recent graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, soprano Jasmine M. Hinchman has appeared in numerous concerts and recitals in all shapes and sizes, from singing in the Conservatory Chorus to performing in a benefit concert for the Iran Bam Project in New York City. As well as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Hinchman has studied music at Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan and The Juilliard School in New York City, and is currently a student of Fay.

Jason Stanton, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, has lived in Reno for more than 15 years.

Initially his studies were entirely classical in nature, and he took part in various competitions at an early age, including becoming a two-time finalist in the Pepsi Young Artist Competition in conjunction with the San Francisco Symphony.

During this time, he was also a member of the Pacific Music Society, Bach Society, and studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Although he still retains a love of classical music, he has branched out to most other forms and now plays and sings a variety of styles — including jazz and soul — in the Bistro Roxy at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino. In addition, he has been providing music for church services at The Village Church in Incline and accompanying various area solo artists, both in live performance and the recording studio.

A suggested donation of $15 per person, $30 per family and $10 for seniors over 60 will provide funds for Christ’s work in missions here in Incline as well as throughout the world.

Please call The Village Church for information at (775) 831-0784.
