IHS football team back on the practice field

The Incline High School football team is planning to work on offensive line play and stressing patience with the defense during its bye week.

The Highlanders are back on the practice field this week after falling last week to Pershing County High School in Lovelock, Nev., 50-0.

Coach Kyle Gordon said the team will need to focus on its offensive line if it wants to put up a strong showing on Oct. 17 at home against Mineral County (Hawthorne) High School.

“We have to work on our O-line because right now they’re waiting to get hit instead of getting out there and hitting somebody,” Gordon said. “We’ll work on their footwork and everybody on the team needs to work on staying low this week.”

Gordon said the players were given Monday and Tuesday off for their October break before hitting the practice field again today.

He said that although Friday’s loss was a second-straight tough defeat in a row, the team continues to play and practice with intensity and effort. Incline (0-5) lost 47-0 Friday, Sept. 28 at home to Whittell.

“Even in a blowout, they played unbelievably hard,” said Gordon about the Lovelock game. “It’s kind of cool, even in a rough season they are playing hard straight through until the end of the game.”

Gordon said it’s important to remember his Highlander squad is young — the offensive backfield is composed of sophomore running back Tyler Bahneman and freshman quarterback Patrick Murray — and being patient is a key for this team.

Patience is also the name of the game for the Highlander defense, who Gordon said is having issues with over-pursuing and opening up lanes for opposing offensive backs.

“The hardest thing for them is to be patient — they just want to make something happen so bad that they’ll run in there and go right past the guy carrying the ball,” Gordon said.

He complimented Murray’s composure, saying the freshman quarterback carries himself more like a junior on the field, but he said his entire offense needs to execute more effectively in order to win.

“We have to execute; we have to get our plays off,” Gordon said.

He said Hawthorne generally plays with a large running back, stressing the importance of solid defensive line play for the Highlanders.
