The Incline Village post office was filled with activity Tuesday morning — but it was in the back room, not at the front windows, where everyone was gathered.

Not because people received a lost shipment of Christmas mail, but because many were gathering to greet, hug and send off with good wishes five employees who are retiring.

The employees have spent a total of 116 years working for the U. S. Postal Service. Many have served only in the Incline Village/Crystal Bay area since beginning careers with the post office.

Cassandra “Cassie” Ferrell started her career at the main post office in Dallas at the age of 19. Now completing 32 years with the postal service, Ferrell will retire from the post office after being here for the last 27 years.

“I am tired of the commute,” said Ferrell, who lives in Sun Valley, Nev.

The commute for Susan Kirkpatrick is not as difficult since she lives in Truckee. Her entire 23-year career with the postal service has been in the Crystal Bay and Incline Village post offices. Her sister also works for the Incline Village post office.

“I plan to do more work for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) once I retire,” said Kirkpatrick.

In 1998 when Shelley Misch started working at the Incline Village post office she was the one and only relief carrier.

“I am actually leaving on Jan. 17,” said Misch. Because Tuesday was a convenient time to hold the party, she was included in the December party. Misch is moving to San Diego, where she is pursuing a career as a nurse.

“I worked as a medical assistant in San Diego before moving here,” she said. “When I heard they needed help at the post office I came and have been here ever since.”

Samuel “Sam” Pennino, a graduate of Incline High School, has worked all his years at the Incline post office and is well-known around town.

“I am planning to concentrate on my own business,” Pennino said about his plans after retirement.

One of the honored guests was unable to make the party. Gregory “Greg” Pitts has worked as the custodian at the Incline Village post office for 17 years. He started his career in the maintenance department of the Reno post office. Art Nishimoto, the organizer for the party, said Pitts was unable to attend because of a doctors appointment for his recent shoulder surgery.

Friends, co-workers and families gathered around the guests to extend thanks and good wishes. Nishimoto made sure that flowers and diaries were ready for each retiree, and, of course lots and lots of food.
