INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. Well, cant win em all.
The Incline High School varsity wrestling team placed sixth Saturday at the Lions Tournament at Douglas High School, more than a week after winning the ROP Winter Games on Dec. 23.
Still, IHS coach Jeremy Reichert was pleased with his teams performance Saturday, considering the meet featured a lot of 4A and 3A talent and considering Incline wrestled with a depleted lineup because of holiday vacations. The Highlanders finished behind Douglas, Lowry, Spanish Springs, Carson and Bishop Manogue high schools.
We finished ahead of every 2A team and every 3A team with the exception of Lowry so we felt pretty good about our finish, Reichert said. Again, we (were) wrestling without our complete lineup, so getting those potential scorers back after the break will be a breath of fresh air.
Once again, Jordan Cronin led the way for the Highlanders, earning a first-place finish in the heavyweight division. He entered the tourney as the No. 1 seed, after three first-round pins, he scored a 3-1 win over South Tahoe big man Jon Fagot.
Jordan held a small lead of 1-0 after earning a second period escape, and was able to do just enough offense from neutral to show the referee that he was more aggressive than his opponent earning 2 stalling points along the way, Reichert said.
Cody Feliciano had an impressive showing, placing second in the 103-pound division. Feliciano, the No. 2 seed, fell in the finals to Curtis Lampert of Spanish Springs.
The experience was one that I hope he can remember, Reichert said. He will improve as a wrestler from the mental aspect with his participation and preparation in the finals.
Grabbing a third-place finish for Incline was Luis Salazar, who transitioned to a lower weight class to fill a void in Inclines lineup.
Luis has always been a talented wrestler who just could not get a complete season together in the past, Reichert said. He realizes the importance of his contribution to the team and is allowing his talent to shine through.
Salazar pinned his first opponent before wrestling the top seed of his weight class and dropping a close match. He then won three straight matches to earn his medal.
Another notable performance came from Sean Fox, a wrestler who gets better with each week, Reichert said.
He came out of nowhere to get into the championship semifinals with two pins in the opening two rounds, Reichert said. As a non-seeded wrestler, to make it that far is a show of determination and strength. Sean is so close to becoming an every-weekend medalist. He has the heart, he has the talent, he just needs a little more strength to get there.
Reichert also credited Logan Cohen and Riley Warren, who both finished one match from earning medals.
Next for the Highlanders is the Sparks Tournament, which kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday at Sparks High School.
Our team is hoping to become its complete self with everyone returning from vacation, healing from injuries and getting eligible, Reichert said. Our goal is coming closer and closer as the weeks progress, and we will have to put the pieces together quickly.
On Tuesday, Incline wrestled in a dual against Wooster and Fernley high schools in Fernley. Look to tahoebonanza.com for updates.
