INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. The Incline High School varsity wrestling team had 10 athletes medal en route to a first-place finish at the Sparks Tournament Saturday in Sparks.
Incline beat out Galena and Spanish Springs, who finished second and third, respectively, for the tournament win. It marked the seventh win for Incline this season.
We wrestled without three of our varsity wrestlers and were definitely not too optimistic about being able to finish at the top without Riley (Warren), JJ (Rodriguez) and Tyler Bahneman who have been huge contributors all year for us, said IHS coach Jeremy Reichert. Nevertheless, we pieced together the best lineup we could and went to work. This was the ultimate display of teamwork, as we only finished four points ahead of Galena so each wrestler can look back on the tournament at any match they won and say that it was because of them that we finished in first.
First-place finishes went to Jordan Cronin (285 pounds) and Logan Cohen (145 pounds). Earning second-place honors were Cody Feliciano (103 pounds), Travis Causey (112 pounds) and Kyle Bahneman.
Moises Navarro (125 pounds), Luis Salazar (135 pounds) and Jimmy Markman (130 pounds) each placed third, while Johnny Chard (12 pounds) and Sean Fox (130 pounds) earned fourth-place medals.
Rechert said he was proud of the whole team, as it was able to overcome adversity to win the tournament.
These guys are usually not used to this situation as we havent won a bracketed tournament in 10 years, Reichert said. They learned on the fly how to stick together as a team and get the team points with their individual matches. They united and encouraged each other, stood behind each other, routed on each other and proved just how powerful they can be as a team.
Saturdays win was its second tournament team title of the year, as it also won the Dec. 23 ROP Winter Games. Incline also has enjoyed dual wins on Dec. 2 (Hug/Yerington), Dec. 9 (Galena/Fernley), Dec. 16 (Truckee/Dayton), Jan. 6 (Wooster/Fernley/Pershing County); and it won the Reed Duals on Dec. 13 at Reed High School.
Next for Incline is the Nevada Union Tournament Saturday at Nevada Union High School.
While we want to celebrate our accomplishments, we need to keep the ultimate goal in site, that being a state title, Reichert said. It will be tough for these guys to let go of our past wins, but it will be necessary for us to not rest and continue to keep that fire and desire.
