Firm, icy conditions on Exhibition Run at Squaw Valley USA made it difficult for many young Diamond Peak skiers to finish the course at the Jan. 10-11 Far West giant slalom race.

“The course was very difficult for a J4/J5 race,” said Diamond Peak Ski Team coach Josee Lacasse. “It was more like a difficult J3 course.”

Saturday’s results

For the J5 girls, Amanda Pretti finished ninth with a combined time of 2 minutes, 9.11 seconds, while teammate Hannah Laurie placed 15th (2:14.74), Emily Donahue 22nd (2:22.28), Erica Kennedy 23rd (2:24.64) and Alyssa Kennedy 32nd (2:36.15).

In the J4 girls division, Remi Wolf, Lauren Keller, and Hannah Johnson placed 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively, with combined times of 1:56.17, 1:56.37 and 1:56.52. Anna Hartman placed 43rd (2:18.71).

The course was very icy and rutted,” said Amanda Pretti, who was the very last of the 277 racers to run the course. “It was the most challenging course I’ve seen.”

Even though 20 percent of the 82 J5 boys were unable to finish the icy course, Diamond Peak’s Nelson Bedient captured fifth place with a combined time of 1:53.18. Mitchell Cornell placed 19th (2:06.08) while Winston Pretti came in 26th (2:07.57), after a fall on his second run knocked him out of seventh place.

Other J5 boys who raced well for Diamond Peak include Lucas Wolf in 29th (2:08.58), Michael Hartman in 44th (2:17.10), and Casey Delaney in 49th (2:23.21). Hans Rathsack did not finish his second run.

Diamond Peak’s J4 boys had a difficult day. Gavin Chen’s ski pre-released, and Ian Reeves and Zane Bensing both took falls. Hunter Pitts finished 35th (1:58.28) and Liam Kilroy finished 54th (2:19.43).

Sunday’s results

For the J5 girls, Amanda Pretti took the podium with a third-place finish and a combined time of 1:58.44, while Erica Kennedy finished 10th (2:07.17), Hannah Laurie 14th (2:08.03), Laurel Taylor 28th (2:22.37), Alyssa Kennedy 35th (2:28.83) and Anya Bensing 36th (2:45.77).

In the J4 girls division, Remi Wolf placed 17th with a time 1:54.05, Lauren Keller finished 28th (1:59.88) and teammate Hannah Johnson fell on the second run.

In the J5 boys division, Nelson Bedient took the podium with a second-place finish (1:48.79), Hans Rathsack finished 25th (2:01.42), Mitchell Cornell 26th (2:02.55), Lukas Wolf 27th (2:02.58), Micheal Hartman 32nd (2:04.23) and Casey Delaney 57th (2:14.73).

One of the most unusual moments of the day occurred during Winston Pretti’s second run, when Pretti actually caught up to the racer ahead of him. Pretti was given a re-run, in which he finished seventh, but was disqualified because of a ski pre-release on his first run.

For the J4 boys, Ian Reeves finished 17th with a time of 1:46.09, Gavin Chen placed 28th (1:51.43) and Hunter Pitts came in 47th (1:58.67). Liam Kilroy and Zane Bensing fell on their first runs.

“The kids skied the course really well on Sunday,” Lacasse said. “They learned from the course on Saturday, and they came back and knew what to do on Sunday.”

The next race for the J4/J5’s is a slalom race Saturday and Sunday at Sugarbowl. Complete results for Far West races can be found at www.fwskiing.us/competition/results.
