INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. Getting contributions from nearly every player on the roster, the Sierra Nevada College mens snowboard team came home Sunday from Winter Park, Colo., with the 2009 United States Collegiate Skiing and Snowboarding Associations overall national title.
The Eagles placed first in all four mens events, with four different athletes winning.
It was great for the guys to have every event won by a different athlete, coach Jeff Corrado said.
Junior Spencer Cordovano won the giant slalom as SNC won the event, sophomore Spencer Reeves won boardercross, freshman Tucker Norred won the slopestlye, as SNC won the event, and sophomore Austen Butler led the charge in halfpipe by placing first, as the team also won.
Coach Jeff Corrado said he was impressed by the womens team as well, which placed second, as freshman Devon Crowther took the overall crown.
We got incredible finishes from Devon, (freshman) Jesse Kott and (sophomore ) Nora Johannessen, Corrado said. Devon had an awesome attitude and really stepped it up to get the overall individual.
Crowther placed first twice, in halfpipe and boardercross, and also finished in the top 10 in slopestyle (fourth) and giant slalom (second).
Kott had two top-10 finishes in halfpipe (fourth) and slopestyle (third), while Johannessen finished eighth in boardercross and ninth in halfpipe.
The story this weekend was very different for the SNC skiers, though.
For the first time in 17 years, SNC did not bring home the overall mens and womens titles.
A couple of close finishes against Utahs Westminster College including a three-way tiebreaker loss to Westminster for the mens overall and a .16 second loss in womens giant slalom left the Eagles in second place for both teams.
It just shows you the league is getting better, Zagar said. Its better and better every year. I think my girls were a little disappointed, but thats how it goes.
Freshman Hedvig Spaengs stood out for the womens team, taking the third overall spot by winning the slalom. Senior Caroline Bergstroem also finished in the top-10 overall with a seventh-place mark.
On the mens side, the team placed second overall after a team giant slalom victory and a fourth place in the GS.
Junior Mickey Ross placed second overall.
