INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. To say the Sierra Nevada College snowboarders did well at the United States Collegiate Skiing and Snowboarding Associations National Championships last week would be accurate.
There was the overall team title for the SNC men. And the second place overall for the three-member womens team. And two individual overall titles for sophomore Spencer Reeves and freshman Devon Crowther.
But dont forget three other Eagles junior Spencer Cordovano, sophomore Austen Butler and freshman Tucker Norred who also won individual event titles.
That about covers it for the Eagles, who came home from Winter Park, Colo., with lots of hardware.
To see all our different athletes performing at a high level last week was awesome, said rookie coach Jeff Corrado. Weve got a ton of talent and got contributions from everybody.
The SNC men had a different male athlete place first in all four USCSSA events.
Reeves placed first in boardercross, Cordovano won giant slalom, Norred took the top-spot in slopestyle and Butler won halfpipe.
Equally impressive, Corrado said, was the performance of Crowther and the womens team, who placed second overall despite only fielding three athletes.
We got incredible finishes from (freshman) Jesse Kott and (sophomore) Nora Johannessen, Corrado said. Everybody had really good times, it was awesome.
Crowther won halfpipe and boardercross and placed second in GS and fourth in slopestyle.
I was really excited for our girls team, Crowther said. We made history and it was pretty awesome to take second.
Corrado praised his young standout for her attitude and abilities.
Devon has an awesome attitude, she really stepped it up to get the overall individual award, Corrado said. Shes really humble and modest, I dont think this will go to her head even being a freshman.
Crowther said she took pride in her halfpipe run, which included back-to-back 360s before landing a 540.
I think my 5(40) sealed the deal, Id done it before but fell, Crowther said.
She said boardercross, which she hadnt raced yet this year, came back naturally.
Probably boardercross was the toughest, Crowther said. Youve got four other people and anything could happen if someone fell, it was the toughest.
Kott notched two top-five finishes, both in halfpipe (fourth) and slopestyle (third); while Johannessen rode her way to two of her own in halfpipe (ninth) and boardercross (eighth).
Corrado said the story of his male overall champion, Reeves, was a bit of a surprise.
Spencer is pretty strong in pipe, so when he fell there he felt he wasnt contributing, Corrado said.
But Reeves overcame his 17th-place finish in the pipe to place first in boardercross, ninth in slopestyle and fifth in giant slalom his least favorite event.
I went into it leaning toward just winning boardercross, Reeves said. I wasnt thinking Id get the overall.
He said good placement in the boardercross event helped to a win there.
I got good gate placement and was out in front for most of it, Reeves said.
Reeves said he got back on the same board for giant slalom an event some boarders use a very stiff, hard setup board.
(GS) is something Im not really into, so I just got on my boardercross board to get it done, Reeves said. He placed fifth in the event.
Cordovano won GS, while the teams lone senior, Seth Gunsauls, placed third. Butler also finished in the top-10 with a seventh.
Following Reeves first place in boardercross were Cordovano (ninth) and Gunsauls (10th).
Norred took slopestyle and was followed across the line by sophomore Tarjei Sporastoyl in second, sophomore Rob McNamara in sixth, Reeves in ninth and Gunsauls in 10th.
Butler took the halfpipe followed by Sporastoyl in second and Norred in fifth.
