Incline baseball begins season with 1-2 mark

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline High School baseball team kicked off its season with a tough 16-14 loss to Smith Valley High School on Friday before splitting a doubleheader with Loyalton High School on Saturday, winning 14-10 and losing 6-0.

The Highlanders (1-2) nearly won the season-opener against Smith Valley after starting the game hot, led by the hitting of junior Tyler Cramer and sophomore Patrick Howe, who both had three hits, and freshman Kyle Clouthier, who added two more.

But Incline struggled late, particularly with pitching and defensive lapses, and Smith Valley pulled ahead for the victory.

“In general, pitchers are getting behind in the count too much and walking too many batters,” said coach Jeff Clouthier. “We need to cut down on the mental mistakes in all aspects of the game.”

In the first of two games against Loyalton Saturday, Incline fell 6-0 after the “hitting, pitching and defense all struggled,” Clouthier said. Incline produced just three hits all game, two of them off the bat of senior Blake Frizzelle.

In the second game, however, the pitching of seniors Mitch Powell and Bryan Smevik and strong offensive production from several Highlanders led to the 14-10 win. Powell picked up the win, and added three RBI. Freshman Patrick Murray had three hits, one of them an inside-the-park home run. Frizzelle and seniors Jackson Elley and Johnathan Chang also got in on the offensive onslaught.

“(We) bounced back well in the second game after a bad loss in the first game against Loyalton,” Clouthier said.

Still, Clouthier added, the Highlanders need to continue to work on “keeping the focus and intensity the whole game.”

The coach will find out if they are improving in that area when Incline takes on Yerington today at 4 p.m. at Yerington High School.
